It was simply the storyline and dialogue of Alice in Wonderland thought I found so disappointing. There was no real wit and the characters (which are so endearingly mad in the books) were simply boring or unlikeable. I usually love  Tim Burton´s films, they are fantastically well-made and witty and strange, however, this one felt as if he´d lost his mojo!

The film was pretty to look at, at least. Alice´s dresses were the most beautiful costumes, I also liked Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum and wonderland in general. Still, it felt like Burton had a wonderful opportunity here and made nothing of it.

But I know there are some people who loved the film, I really wish I could be one of them!

Shutter Island was another disappointment (at times it felt like I´d never see a good film again, but I´ve recently seen A Single Man, and loved it). The premise of the island with an insane asylum was interesting enough and the atmosphere great. I also enjoyed the music in itself, although it came across as slightly pompous and misplaced because it was used too often and mostly in scenes that had no suspense of themselves. Before watching the film I took care not to guess at the possible and likely twists (studying literature really makes being surprised by twists unlikely) but turns out that wasn´t necessary because there was just one really obvious one. Perhaps it´s that a modern audience (me ) is  dulled and now a film has to have at least two twists to surprise. or maybe I missed something really essential and the film was too complex for me?

So I´m finally back to posting on this blog and it´s only to complain. Sorry! I hope you liked these films better than I did if you´ve seem them.

Clockwise:

• Saw A Serious Man last week, it was great. Funny, interesting and dark. I love this scene, where the main character, Larry, teaches physics and the camera zooms out to show this huge black board.
• Last week I also discovered Rio´s Elephant Vanilla Chai, one of the best ready-made chai. I´m so happy cafés are finally offering alternatives to coffee, I always feel like I´m 5 when ordering hot chocolate or a dying species when ordering tea (yes, someone actually said that to me today)!
• The Earth is Full button. Not sure exactly why I love buttons so much. I don´t wear them too often and I certainly talk enough. Still, buttons are addicting!
• Beautiful London earrings found on etsy. I never leave the house without earrings (much more important than make-up).
• I missed The IT Crowd on tv (when did they show it in Germany??) but checked out season 2 from the library and can now fully support the hype. The show is as funny as the blurbs on the cover claim, but why are there so few episodes??

At the moment I´m really into britcoms, what is it with the Brits that they can produce one amazing show after the other? I´ve been watching Little Britain on youtube but that´s not ideal and even less comfy. So I was happy to find that my library here has a whole shelf filled with great DVDs of tv shows. I need an episode to relax after uni, before I start the long process of getting motivated to get the paper- writing, researching, reading etc going. And there´s nothing much on tv which is where the DVDs come in.

Last week I discovered Spaced, I know I´m likely the last person to do so, and was immediately hooked. For those who don´t know the show, here´s the amazon.de summary:

Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson are Tim Bisley and Daisy Steiner – two hopeless twentysomethings sharing a flat and pretending to be a couple. Joining them on their urban adventures are wine-swilling landlady Marsha, the rather intense artist who lives downstairs Brian, Tim’s best friend and would-be TA soldier Mike, and Daisy’s best friend, the air-headed Twist. Together they tackle the big questions that the 21st century poses: who are they, what they mean to each other and who should switch on the kettle?

Spaced is hilarious, interesting, and  . . well, spaced. I love the characters, especially Marsha, the way she talks! The show also features Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), again as best friends, one of the best duos on screen today.

They had only season 2 in the library, and I´ve been debating since whether I can justify spending  20 euros on the definitve edition. Any thoughts?

Zutaten:

500 g Spinat
2 Kg Geflügelhackfleisch
2 Knoblauchzehen
3 Scheiben Speck
450g Dosentomaten
120g Tomatenpuree
120 ml Tomatensauce (Lieblingsfertigsauce oder hausgemachte)
120 ml Hühnerbrühe
Lasagneblätter (nicht vorgekocht)
120g Parmesan, gerieben

Für die Käsesauce:

60g Butter
40g Mehl
600 ml Milch
120g geriebener Parmesan

Zubereitung:

Spinat auftauen lassen und in einer Pfanne mit Olivenöl kurz anbraten. Aus der
Pfanne nehmen und beiseite stellen. Wieder Olivenöl in der Pfanne erhitzen und
Knoblauch, Speck und Gehacktes ca. 5 Minuten anbraten. Tomatensauce, Tomaten,
Tomatenpuree und Hühnerbrühe zugeben und zum kochen bringen. Hitze reduzieren,
Deckel halb auflegen und ca. 10 Minuten köcheln lassen, bis die Sauce andickt.
Salzen und Pfeffern.
Für die Käsesauce die Butter in einer kleinen Pfanne schmelzen und mit Mehl
bestäuben. Auf kleiner Hitze eine Minute köcheln lassen, bis sie Farbe annimmt.
Von der Hitze nehmen und Milch unter Rühren zugeben. Wieder auf die Hitze stellen
und konstant für ca. 4 Minzten Rühren. Die Sauce wird dicklich und schäumt.
Von der Hitze nehmen und den Käse einrühren.
Die Lasagne schichtweise in der Auflaufform zusammenstellen. Erst die
Tomatensauce, dann die Lasagneblätter, Spinat, Lasagneblätter und
Käsesauce und zum Schluss den Parmesan.

In den Ofen stellen und 50-60 Minuten bei 180°C backen.

Anmerkungen:

Statt 2Kg reichen auch ca. 1000g völlig aus, Geflügelhack kann mit Rinderhack ersetzt

werden. Darauf achten, stärker als im Rezept zu würzen, vor allem den Spinat und das

Fleisch.

Gestern habe ich mit Mirjam die Lange Reihe unsicher gemacht, und unter anderem einen tollen second hand Buchladen gefunden. Dort gibts auch ein Regal mit englischsprachigen Büchern und ich habe mir Agatha Christies Autobiografie für nur 3 Euro geleistet!

1. In einem großen Topf einen Schuss Erdnussöl erhitzen, Zwiebel darin braten. Dann Chili und Kreuzkümmel hinzu. Karotten und Linsen zugeben und mischen. Schließlich Gemüsebrühe zuschütten und das Ganze zum Kochen bringen. Hitze runter und alles ca. 15 Minuten köcheln lassen bis die Linsen weich und geschwollen sind.
2. Von der Flamme nehmen und Sahne zugeben. Dann die Suppe pürieren. Auf der Platte erhitzen, aber nicht kochen lassen und mit Korianderblättern garnieren. Mit einem Klacks Joghurt und Naanbrot servieren.

So sah das Ganze dann gestern bei mir aus, und hat auch toll geschmeckt. Wer kein Naanbrot auftreiben kann, kann dazu auch ein leckeres Vollkornbrot nehmen. Wichtig ist, dass man einen Pürierstab oder Ähnliches besitzt und genug Zeit hat um so ne Menge Karotten zu reiben. Das dauert locker ne Viertelstunde mit der Hand. Aber das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen!
